At the beginning the basic question was whether it would be possible to create sound "images" of clear three-dimensional evidence, by the study of the acoustic stereopsis phenomena. Acoustic stereopsis is the auditory system's skill to use the data held in the difference of the information coming from the two ears.
We also tried to bear experiences and theoretic models coming from the study of visual perception in mind, experimenting whether it would be possible to create that almost disquieting sense of space, three-dimensionality and "realism", which has been obtained by the control of some peculiar information.
As examples we could mention the ones used to create depth optical illusions, keeping in mind ideas related to perspective gradients (the linear gradients, of object size and micro-structural density) and to the depth kinetic effect.

During the research period the possibility to configure an integrated recording and reproducing system emerged, making use. among other things, of the particular techniques allowing the production - in the visual field - of one hallucinatory three-dimensional image from two "two-dimensional" ones.

The basic hypothesis is referred to Helmholtz idea related to the existence of a psychic act defined as an "unconscious inference", which integrates two separated sensory evidences structured in a hallucinatory tridimensional third, also picking suggestions from Julesz ideas, included in his researches related to random correlograms.
An additional hypothesis concerns the existence of a mental three-dimensional space, independent of sensorial information.

The interesting data refers to the actual realization of a sound recording and reproduction theoretic model (compatible with stereophonic sound reproducing systems) which allows the stimulation of those sound information's elaboration paths that lead to the arising of paradoxical perceptive phenomena still not completely understood on theoretic ground, but absolutely stable and re-produceable.

From a psychologic point of view it is also interesting to evaluate one more idea (clinical researches on neurophysiological and affective/symbolic effects of AVS listening are available > Abstracts) concerning the particular psychic condition the listener finds himself involved in, in the moment in which he switches to "another" sound information's integration model.
All would be about a condition in which a diffused well-being sensation emerges, often with a correlated sense of "estrangement" from the surrounding world and a lightness sensation. We think that this state of consciousness unfolds an “ecstatic” involvement into the musical event.

Thanks the peculiar structure of these images it is possible to understand – by analogy - how there is the possibility to reconstruct a three-dimensional stage of hallucinatory evidence starting from two two-dimensional images, in which certain shapes cannot be seen looking at them normally.










This example allows to understand very well why it is so important how micro-information is treated by all the audio system, because it is the processing of this information that allows to reconstruct a three-dimensional image. Put this picture 30 cm away from you, take a pencil, put it in middle, centered between your eyes: while looking at the pencil, move it towards you. At a certain point you will notice on the background three fuzzy squares, one in the centre. Take away the pencil from the visual field, while concentrating on the central image and try to focus it (it could be difficult at first). When the central square image becomes stable, in two-three seconds a small central square will appear, "floating" over the original bigger square, with a clear three-dimensional effect.
This happens thanks to the "discovery" of the hidden correlation that links the two matrixes, as you could notice in the picture below.
Here in fact the correlation scheme between two random stereograms is showed. The external part is identical in both pictures, while the central zone is displaced laterally.
